Yuletide!!!

Holy shit, I got three fantastic stories this year and I could not be more pleased and excited by all of them. I'll definitely be coming back to all these for rereads.

First up:

Le Marché Lutin (11326 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 7/7
Fandom: Goblin Market - Christina Rossetti
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Laura (Goblin Market) & Lizzie (Goblin Market)
Characters: Lizzie (Goblin Market), Laura (Goblin Market)
Additional Tags: BDSM, Consensual Kink, Sibling Incest, Modern Retelling, yuleporn
Summary:

A modern(ish) kink-based retelling of the Goblin Market story. When Lizzie's sister Laura calls her, it brings back memories of events twenty years ago. Laura's night out had left her drained and listless, and Lizzie, always looking after her younger sister, decides to investigate. What she finds changes their relationship forever.

This is a really great fic and pretty much exactly what I wanted to read when I requested the fandom. The kink is believable and intensely hot.

Crossguard (5555 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Bi no Isu
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Kabu Nariaki/Nirasawa Shuu
Characters: Kabu Nariaki, Nirasawa Shuu
Additional Tags: Unhealthy Relationships, Yakuza, D/s, Knifeplay, Scars
Summary:

Murder is both a cockblock and an aphrodisiac.

I'm outright stunned that I got fic in this fandom. It was a tiny little [1,1] request for a fairly obscure BL series. And I didn't just get fic for it, I got blazingly hot fic that perfectly fits my request and is in-character. If you're familiar with the series in question, or if you like the kinks in the tags, this is well worth a read.

Kaleidoscopic Katabasis (5334 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: X-Treme X-Men, Marvel (Comics)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Hercules/James Howlett (X-Treme X-Men), Jean Grey/Scott Summers, Alison Blaire/Scott Summers
Characters: James Howlett (X-Treme X-men), Scott Summers (X-Treme X-men), Kurt Waggoner, Hercules (X-treme X-men), Alison Blaire
Additional Tags: Dimension Travel, Alternate Universe, Underworld - Freeform, Hades - Freeform, Orpheus and Eurydice Myth, Greek Mythology - Freeform, Team as Family, Canon Queer Character, Canon Queer Relationship
Summary:

Governor-General James Howlett and Corporal Scott Summers descend to Hades to find Hercules -- but the journey is far more complicated than they bargained for.

This is the last of the three, and by far the most popular with other readers. I can definitely see why; it's pretty much exactly the fic everyone finishing X-Treme X-Men wishes existed, myself included. It is a very satisfying fix-it for a series that ended abruptly and with some very unpleasant, event-driven deaths, and shows a nice understanding of the characters.

Fic from the last year, mostly.
Grenadier
undomielregina
I'm freezing, but I really don't want to turn on the heat yet. It's times like this that I think I definitely want a kotatsu as soon as we have room for one. I'm already sitting on a floor cushion in front of the coffee table. A kotatsu would just make this warmer and cozier. Someday, I hope...

I realize I haven't actually posted anything in months and months. Mostly because my life is actually that boring but partly because I keep getting distracted. (I really should talk about our trip to Japan this spring at some point...)

It occurs to me that I never actually talked about how last Yuletide went for me. I got a gift that was exactly what I wanted, including some things that I didn't remember to mention when I talked about the fandom in my letter, so I can't believe how lucky I was. Conditions Met by [archiveofourown.org profile] cureelliott, Mouretsu Pirates, Marika/Chiaki, G

I wrote Meditations on Rule, a Nausicaä manga fic about Kushana, G. I was really lucky in my match; Truth was interested in the same aspects of the character that I love. I had a bit of drama over canon review (I thought my print copies of the manga were here, but we'd loaned them to D's brother) but I really enjoyed writing it.

This year's Yuletide is so far going a bit more smoothly. I got an assignment I'm both very happy about and slightly intimidated by, but I have an idea that I think my recipient will enjoy and when I needed clarification on some things, the answers I got suggest that we're pretty much on the same page. So I actually have a bit written already, which given my chronic procrastination is kind of astonishing so I'm feeling pretty good, although I still have to work on making the disparate fragments coalesce into a complete fic.

And last in my fannish productivity for this year, I spent a good six months writing And Lost No Inch of Place, a Maiden Rose fic. It's Klaus/Taki, M rated. This was kind of a funny one because the end snuck up on me; I was expecting it to be at least another thousand words longer and explicit when I suddenly realized that not only was what I had thematically complete, but anything further would actually undercut the character arc I'd managed to develop. It's also more than twice as long as my next longest fic and had by far the most extensive beta process of anything I've written, so it was a real learning experience all around.

OMG

Okay, I know I haven't posted in forever, and that this is basically a contentless post. I'm sorry. But I OT3 ship Agatha/Gil/Tarvek in Girl Genius so hard that it hurts. I've been slowly coming to hope (not really expect, but hope) that the comic might even treat that as endgame, given that the Foglios have teased it before, and that they publish independently and so can't be stopped just by it being an unconventional decision. Plus, if you go by the comments on the LJ feed for the comic, it wouldn't be unpopular with their fans.

All of which is to say, Friday's comic is the first one that really feels like the OT3 is maybe coalescing a bit, rather than being mere fannish subtext. It left me thrilled and gasping and full of feels (really, there's no other way to describe it.) That last panel, oh my god <3

Incipit Liber Novus The Eternal Flame
Fandom: The Once and Future King
Pairing: Arthur/Guenever/Lancelot
Rating: G
Summary: At last, Arthur can no longer turn a blind eye.

This was initially written a year ago and was supposed to be part of a longer, explicit fic that stalled out. But I recently showed it to a couple people who said it worked as it was and encouraged me to post it, and I'm taking them at their word.

Lancelot made no move to stop him, too caught in his own guilt and shame to be of any use. So it was left to Guenever, with her beautiful selfishness, to rescue them all.

"Arthur," she said, "stay," and he turned back and sat down. So simply was disaster averted.

Still it was left to her, for neither man could reconcile their fine sensibilities and ideals with what now lay before them. She looked at them both: Lancelot, who had betrayed all his beliefs for love of her, with his ugly, beloved face now twisted in self-loathing and Arthur, her perfect husband, whose goodness and maturity had always seemed to put him a little out of her reach. It must be possible to love two people romantically after all, for at that moment that is what Guenever felt for them both.

Figures!
Grenadier
undomielregina
So, I haven't mentioned that D and I started buying figures this year. It's terrible, because we just made the leap from "only series and characters we really, really like" to "I'm kind of meh on the series but it's too awesome not to" and that way lies madness. But I thought I might as well share pictures, because at least they're pretty.

Seriously, madnessCollapse )

If you're interested in close-ups, the photos are here, including one of the old arrangement before we got the one with the penguins today. I'll probably post photos of the Marika figure that hasn't shipped yet whenever she gets here, but that could be weeks since she has to come from Japan.

Oh, and also visible in the photo is an animation cel, which is our other big vice. That one's from Batman: the Animated Series, episode "Joker's Wild." It's not especially nice by the standards collectors use, but from a display standpoint, it's a lot cooler than a more desirable but also more static close-up.

Dear writer,

Hello! I know I'm rather late posting this, so I hope I didn't cause you too much stress. My computer met with an unfortunate accident yesterday, and took my letter draft with it.

I hope something that I say here clicks with you, and you have fun writing. Also, I tend to tl;dr about things I love, which includes all these pairings, so I hope it goes without saying that everything here is completely optional, and what I most want is a fic you were enthusiastic about writing.

OMG, OMG, OMG you guys, Ben Browder being in this episode means there's someone whose accent (well, whose American accent, anyway) doesn't make me want to die of embarrassment. He doesn't even feel like he needs to fake a bad twang \o/

Okay, I'm totally exaggerating, but the woman who did the opening voiceover is so bad and she's not the only one. ;_;

So, it's Kink Bingo time again. I'll admit, my card isn't inspiring me nearly as much as last year's (I had tons of ideas for that that I never got around to writing), but I'll soldier through somehow. On the bright side, I do have one square that overlaps from last year and that happens to be one where I have a half-written fic already.

More About NYC in the '30's and Today
Grenadier
undomielregina
I was digging around for images of NYC to make my point about how it would be this eerie almost-familiar bizarro-world for Steve, and I found this set of images. It turns out this photographer did a whole book dedicated to reshooting photos done by a famous '30's photographer, and it strongly captures my point, I think. Some of these are totally different, but in a lot of cases you can see a substantial number of buildings remain, and in a couple practically the only differences are the fashions or the number and kind of cars. I really want to get my hands on the book, now, because I think this is fascinating.

Augh
Grenadier
undomielregina
With the explosion of the Avengers fandom, it's getting really tempting to keep a tally of things that existed in New York City during Steve Rogers's lifetime, because a disturbing number of authors seem totally convinced that he practically grew up in the Dark Ages, and it's starting to piss me off. So. Things that totally existed while Steve was living in Brooklyn:

Technicolor films. Also films with sound. The first colorized scenes in films happened really early, and Steve would have been around for The Wizard of Oz (as referenced in The Avengers), Gone with the Wind, and Snow White, also Pinocchio, Dumbo, Fantasia, and Bambi, so he'd probably have a strong familiarity with classic Disney. Talkies would have been around since he was a teenager.

Openly gay entertainers and gay clubs. Seriously. Apparently 1920's New York was really liberal in this regard, although things got a lot more conservative again by the mid-'30's. Still, Steve was a kid during a pretty good period for GLB people by historical standards, and has a background in art that makes him more likely to have met them. He's actually a pretty bad candidate for being homophobic, or significantly more cautious about his relationships than the average modern closeted person if he's written as interested in men. Similarly, he's likely to already have come to terms with his sexuality, imo. It's possible he'd recognize "gay" in its modern meaning, especially if he did know GLB people, but by no means certain. It was current in the gay community, but didn't become mainstream slang until post-war.

Elevators, escalators, and department stores. Also skyscrapers. Significant parts of New York are largely comprised of buildings that were erected in the '30's or earlier, and so would not look entirely unfamiliar to him. Midtown and the financial district (more Midtown) are the big exceptions. He'd have a creepy sense of things being almost familiar, rather than finding it totally disorienting.

The Rockettes. I want fic where Steve finds comforting familiarity in the fact that the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is still a going concern, since it had already been running annually for over ten years before he ended up frozen. He'd love the Thanksgiving parade for similar reasons.

The Hobbit. Steve would already be aware of Tolkien, since the book was well-received critically and popularly. (Comics Cap is a Tolkien fan, so this is relevant.)

The Depression didn't hit until Steve was twelve, so his childhood was during a boom time.

I'm sure that there are other things that will come up in the future, but those are the ones that have hit me recently enough that I remember them to bring up.

Fic: Coming to Terms
Grenadier
undomielregina
Coming to Terms
Fandom: Batman comics
Pairing: Batman/Batman (Bruce/Dick)
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Bruce Wayne is home briefly during Batman Inc, and Batman and Batman encounter each other for almost the first time.
Notes: Written for [community profile] kink_bingo, for the dressup square. Plays with identity, but I don't think it rises to the level of identity porn. There's also some costume kink. This fic is based on Grant Morrison's run on Batman, Batman & Robin, and Batman Inc. (pre-DCnU) and is drawing its characterization from that specific interpretation of the characters. As a result, the characterization is different from how I usually see the characters.

OMG, I'm honestly touched

I just spent the last hour or so playing the second half of Journey. (Oh yeah, I got D hooked on Disgaea, so we bought a PS3 *cough*) I'd only planned to do a stage or two because it was so late, but you know how the game is sort of an MMO? There was one other player traveling right next to me the whole way. We walked together and waited for each other and I haven't had an experience that touching and companionable in a game ever. I think it was the lack of means to communicate -- we just had to take it on faith that the other person also thought we were traveling together.

And...omg, we got separated along the way once and managed to join back up right before a thing that is a spoiler, and that was seriously awesome and I felt better because I had company for it. And we reached the end of the game together. And it was just...we helped each other and shared the trip even though we could barely communicate, and I have no idea who they were and it was amazing.

Well, score one for Apple customer service
Grenadier
undomielregina
I was really irritated to discover after purchasing a Mikado recording that not only was it from a later date than it claimed, but also it was one of the ones with updated lyrics. I like updated lyrics just fine in performance, especially for the songs that were intended to be topical, but I really prefer original versions for recordings since the topicality gets dated really, really fast. (I did discover just recently courtesy of the 1926 recording that the song is always changed a little in more recent days thanks to a really foul reference to blackface performers but I don't object to that for obvious reasons.) In any case, it rather surprised me that the lyrics were updated -- my understanding was that D'Oyly Carte has a reputation as purists and is against modernizing, so it was rather shocking to find a recording of theirs that was full of references to walkmen and yuppies.

In any case, I fired off an irritated e-mail to customer service because really wtf and also D'Oyly Carte recordings are always priced rather highly (I understand why -- smaller volume of sales, lots of people involved in the productions, etc) and it galled me to pay for something under false pretenses. Fortunately this was 1) rather obviously a problem, 2) easy to prove and 3) not something I could really have figured out pre-purchase from the preview available so they came through with a refund really promptly. So anyway, good on them for not being jackasses and trying to argue that it was my fault or anything like that and for being so prompt about it.

So Santorum doesn't want women serving in combat roles in the military because, in his own words, "so my concern is being in combat in that situation instead of being focused on the mission, they may be more concerned with protecting someone who may be in a vulnerable position, a woman in a vulnerable position." (full quote here)

In other words, he thinks that exposure to women in danger (never mind that plenty of units already have by servicewomen attached without this becoming an issue) turns any right-thinking man into this:
