Yuletide!!!

Holy shit, I got three fantastic stories this year and I could not be more pleased and excited by all of them. I'll definitely be coming back to all these for rereads.

First up:

Le Marché Lutin (11326 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 7/7
Fandom: Goblin Market - Christina Rossetti
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Laura (Goblin Market) & Lizzie (Goblin Market)
Characters: Lizzie (Goblin Market), Laura (Goblin Market)
Additional Tags: BDSM, Consensual Kink, Sibling Incest, Modern Retelling, yuleporn
Summary:

A modern(ish) kink-based retelling of the Goblin Market story. When Lizzie's sister Laura calls her, it brings back memories of events twenty years ago. Laura's night out had left her drained and listless, and Lizzie, always looking after her younger sister, decides to investigate. What she finds changes their relationship forever.

This is a really great fic and pretty much exactly what I wanted to read when I requested the fandom. The kink is believable and intensely hot.

Crossguard (5555 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Bi no Isu
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Kabu Nariaki/Nirasawa Shuu
Characters: Kabu Nariaki, Nirasawa Shuu
Additional Tags: Unhealthy Relationships, Yakuza, D/s, Knifeplay, Scars
Summary:

Murder is both a cockblock and an aphrodisiac.

I'm outright stunned that I got fic in this fandom. It was a tiny little [1,1] request for a fairly obscure BL series. And I didn't just get fic for it, I got blazingly hot fic that perfectly fits my request and is in-character. If you're familiar with the series in question, or if you like the kinks in the tags, this is well worth a read.

Kaleidoscopic Katabasis (5334 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: X-Treme X-Men, Marvel (Comics)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Hercules/James Howlett (X-Treme X-Men), Jean Grey/Scott Summers, Alison Blaire/Scott Summers
Characters: James Howlett (X-Treme X-men), Scott Summers (X-Treme X-men), Kurt Waggoner, Hercules (X-treme X-men), Alison Blaire
Additional Tags: Dimension Travel, Alternate Universe, Underworld - Freeform, Hades - Freeform, Orpheus and Eurydice Myth, Greek Mythology - Freeform, Team as Family, Canon Queer Character, Canon Queer Relationship
Summary:

Governor-General James Howlett and Corporal Scott Summers descend to Hades to find Hercules -- but the journey is far more complicated than they bargained for.

This is the last of the three, and by far the most popular with other readers. I can definitely see why; it's pretty much exactly the fic everyone finishing X-Treme X-Men wishes existed, myself included. It is a very satisfying fix-it for a series that ended abruptly and with some very unpleasant, event-driven deaths, and shows a nice understanding of the characters.

Fic from the last year, mostly.

I'm freezing, but I really don't want to turn on the heat yet. It's times like this that I think I definitely want a kotatsu as soon as we have room for one. I'm already sitting on a floor cushion in front of the coffee table. A kotatsu would just make this warmer and cozier. Someday, I hope...

I realize I haven't actually posted anything in months and months. Mostly because my life is actually that boring but partly because I keep getting distracted. (I really should talk about our trip to Japan this spring at some point...)

It occurs to me that I never actually talked about how last Yuletide went for me. I got a gift that was exactly what I wanted, including some things that I didn't remember to mention when I talked about the fandom in my letter, so I can't believe how lucky I was. Conditions Met by [archiveofourown.org profile] cureelliott, Mouretsu Pirates, Marika/Chiaki, G

I wrote Meditations on Rule, a Nausicaä manga fic about Kushana, G. I was really lucky in my match; Truth was interested in the same aspects of the character that I love. I had a bit of drama over canon review (I thought my print copies of the manga were here, but we'd loaned them to D's brother) but I really enjoyed writing it.

This year's Yuletide is so far going a bit more smoothly. I got an assignment I'm both very happy about and slightly intimidated by, but I have an idea that I think my recipient will enjoy and when I needed clarification on some things, the answers I got suggest that we're pretty much on the same page. So I actually have a bit written already, which given my chronic procrastination is kind of astonishing so I'm feeling pretty good, although I still have to work on making the disparate fragments coalesce into a complete fic.

And last in my fannish productivity for this year, I spent a good six months writing And Lost No Inch of Place, a Maiden Rose fic. It's Klaus/Taki, M rated. This was kind of a funny one because the end snuck up on me; I was expecting it to be at least another thousand words longer and explicit when I suddenly realized that not only was what I had thematically complete, but anything further would actually undercut the character arc I'd managed to develop. It's also more than twice as long as my next longest fic and had by far the most extensive beta process of anything I've written, so it was a real learning experience all around.

Dear Yuletide Writer,

First and most importantly, thank you so much for writing for me! I can't wait to see what you'll come up with, and I really hope you choose to write something you enjoy, rather than feeling constrained by my prompts.

OMG

Okay, I know I haven't posted in forever, and that this is basically a contentless post. I'm sorry. But I OT3 ship Agatha/Gil/Tarvek in Girl Genius so hard that it hurts. I've been slowly coming to hope (not really expect, but hope) that the comic might even treat that as endgame, given that the Foglios have teased it before, and that they publish independently and so can't be stopped just by it being an unconventional decision. Plus, if you go by the comments on the LJ feed for the comic, it wouldn't be unpopular with their fans.

All of which is to say, Friday's comic is the first one that really feels like the OT3 is maybe coalescing a bit, rather than being mere fannish subtext. It left me thrilled and gasping and full of feels (really, there's no other way to describe it.) That last panel, oh my god <3

Ficlet: Incipit Liber Novus The Eternal Flame (The Once and Future King, Arthur/Guenever/Lancelot)

Incipit Liber Novus The Eternal Flame
Fandom: The Once and Future King
Pairing: Arthur/Guenever/Lancelot
Rating: G
Summary: At last, Arthur can no longer turn a blind eye.

This was initially written a year ago and was supposed to be part of a longer, explicit fic that stalled out. But I recently showed it to a couple people who said it worked as it was and encouraged me to post it, and I'm taking them at their word.

Lancelot made no move to stop him, too caught in his own guilt and shame to be of any use. So it was left to Guenever, with her beautiful selfishness, to rescue them all.

"Arthur," she said, "stay," and he turned back and sat down. So simply was disaster averted.

Still it was left to her, for neither man could reconcile their fine sensibilities and ideals with what now lay before them. She looked at them both: Lancelot, who had betrayed all his beliefs for love of her, with his ugly, beloved face now twisted in self-loathing and Arthur, her perfect husband, whose goodness and maturity had always seemed to put him a little out of her reach. It must be possible to love two people romantically after all, for at that moment that is what Guenever felt for them both.

Figures!
Grenadier
undomielregina
So, I haven't mentioned that D and I started buying figures this year. It's terrible, because we just made the leap from "only series and characters we really, really like" to "I'm kind of meh on the series but it's too awesome not to" and that way lies madness. But I thought I might as well share pictures, because at least they're pretty.

Seriously, madnessCollapse )

If you're interested in close-ups, the photos are here, including one of the old arrangement before we got the one with the penguins today. I'll probably post photos of the Marika figure that hasn't shipped yet whenever she gets here, but that could be weeks since she has to come from Japan.

Oh, and also visible in the photo is an animation cel, which is our other big vice. That one's from Batman: the Animated Series, episode "Joker's Wild." It's not especially nice by the standards collectors use, but from a display standpoint, it's a lot cooler than a more desirable but also more static close-up.

Since we matched, you must love at least one of these fandoms just as much as I do. I'm sure I'll love anything you write, so I hope you don't feel constrained by anything I say here. Optional details are very certainly optional!
